Doing a PHD after Fifty is our topic today! I met Monika de Waal, specialist in organizational development, change and strategic management, with a long-term commitment to improving the effectiveness of leadership as well as intercultural interactions quite some years ago as she was looking for Third Culture Kids to interview for her PHD and now she has it! Join us as we discuss self- development, passion, long-term determination, and the fulfillment it brings and of course the topic of Third Culture Kids!

BIO

Born in Oosterbeek in the Netherlands, in 1961, Monika de Waal lived in Pakistan during the first six years of her life, becoming a Third Culture Kid. After moving back to the Netherlands, she completed her academic education at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1986 with two Masters of Science: Education and Andragogy. In 1997 she obtained an Master of Business Administration of Henley Management College. And finished her PhD in September at the Erasmus University School for Behavioral and Social Sciences on the topic of Third Culture Kids as Unique Sources, their intercultural competences and cultural identity at work.
For more than 30 years Monika has been running her own business. With the support of a team of international colleagues, Monika has become a specialist in organizational development, change and strategic management, with a long-term commitment to improving the effectiveness of leadership as well as intercultural interactions. Her focus is on creating opportunities for dialogue in complex organizations which undergo change. One of her core interests is in organizational development and process consulting. Three main interconnected themes are part of her interventions: leadership, change management, and dealing with differences, including intercultural and value system differences, and gender and age differences. Tracking and changing mind bugs in mental models upon which organizations base their vision is always part of her approach.
