Someone I interviewed on my Fabulous after Fifty podcast recommended this book and of course I could not resist the sheer provocation of the title.
It is a surprising, thought-provoking, and deep reflection on femininity, on divine power which will undoubtedly leave you at times uncomfortable, at others giggly, where some parts are sure to resonate more than others but from which you do emerge, to whatever degree, more radiantly connected to your inner Goddess.
She discusses in no uncertain terms the geography of our body, ‘cliteracy’ , how to use our “mini brain”, our GPS (Great Pussy in the Sky as our compass) and the “ sensual intelligence that comes from a connection to our very source”.
“ Pussy is the source of our pleasure and pleasure is the source of our power” she says, not in a selfish way but with the idea that “the more glorious she feels, the more generous she will be with others” and that “ tuning in is turning on (…) taking exquisite care of ourselves is serving the divine”.
Mama Gena sees the female orgasm as representing not only pleasure but connection, intimacy, elevating her spiritual and emotional state and fueling her life with pleasure – from bedroom to boardroom.
I learnt that all orgasms are cliterally centered as the clitoris boasts actually 8000 nerve endings (male organs 4000) and its roots travel through the vaginal walls all the way to the anus.
I cannot personally imagine taking part in one of the mass masturbation classes as the School of Womanly Arts but I did like the idea of using the tools of a courtesan, plugging in to your innate divinity, attracting what you desire, choosing beauty and being outrageous.
When discussing the painful grief she had experienced she states” in the hand of the courtesan I found the key to unlocking the spiral of my rupture, my grief. The key was her willingness to be the author of her own story”. Now that is something I always advocate. Discussing rupture she adds “ we are designed to rupture in order to continually shed the skin that no longer fits us”, which I can also relate to.
The authors sees women, as many do nowadays as the largest source of untapped potential on our planet, which I tend to agree with as with her quote that: “Radiance comes from a woman’s knowing and owning the truth: that she is the portal to life. Just like the sun, her light is always on. There is somebody home. She is connected to the elemental life force (…) Knowing and owning the source of her feminine power is the only antidote to the crisis of confidence among women today.”
There are also fun tips for a happier life such as:
- Swamping as means to work through something you are upset about and involves wearing trash clothes, preferably a rubbish bag and getting it out your system by yelling, banging etc
- And Favorite frames where we reflect on whatever pleasurable experience we have had and actively remember the highlights and share them which helps us fully digest the pleasure
In a nutshell, an original ode to female pleasure as source of good for the world and an invitation to get in touch with ourselves, to know ourselves, to claim our birthright and follow her exhortation for each of us to act like a candle, lighting other women’s candles until our whole world is illuminated.
Enjoy!
